7 Minnesota pizza shops make Yelp list of 100 best in the Midwest

Seven Minnesota restaurants made the list of Yelp's 100 Best Pizza Spots in the Midwest .

It's another in a series of pizza-centric accolades that have come into the state recently.

However, with the geographic confines and the litany of accolades already bestowed on Minnesota pizza, it's perhaps a bit surprising that only seven made the list.

Of course, Chicago and Detroit are big pizza cities and there are plenty of other metropolitan hubs inside the confines of Yelp's Midwest, including Kansas City, St. Louis, Cleveland, Milwaukee , and Indianapolis.

Atop the list of Minnesota pizza hubs is Young Joni at 25. The restaurant from Chef Ann Kim , a James Beard winner whose Uptown restaurant Kim's recently unionized , was also praised this summer on the New York Times ' 22 best pizzerias in the country . Her Pizzeria Lola also made the list at 80.

Just two of Minnesota's entrants sit outside the Twin Cities, with Brianno's Deli-Italia in Eagan ranking 82nd and the Maplewood location of the Tono Pizzeria + Cheesesteaks chain sitting at 89th.

Yelp made its list by ranking restaurants based on user reviews, including the volume of reviews and ratings in reviews. It also consulted with its Community Managers to hone in on spots that were clicking for Yelp users. So, it's entertaining, but hardly the final word.

Notably absent are Pig Ate My Pizza (now served at Nouvelle Brewing, having previously been listed as one of the 28 best in the country by Food & Wine ), Wrecktangle Pizza (named best in the country by Good Morning America ), and Zorbaz (recently praised by the New York Times , to the surprise of many Minnesotans), among others.

The full list includes restaurants across 12 states, among which Minnesota ranked sixth, tied with Wisconsin and Iowa. Ahead of Minnesota sat Michigan (16), Illinois (16), Ohio (13), Missouri (10), and Indiana (8). Bringing up the rear were Nebraska (6), Kansas (4), South Dakota (4), and North Dakota (2).
