The Minnesota State Fair is about to take center stage, but the show must go on.

Area theaters continue to play new releases ( Alien: Romulus among them) and repertory screenings of hidden gems, Oscar nominees, bonafide classics, and films that simply haven't gotten enough love.

Here are five movies worth your time over the next week.

    Past Lives (2023)

Wednesday, Aug. 21 at The Commons, part of Movies in the Park

With loads of ‘80s classics and family movies on the menu for Minneapolis’ movies in the park lineup this summer, Past Lives is something of an oddity.

The Oscar-nominated South Korean film — the debut feature from Celine Song — is a tender, complicated look at a web of friendship and love. Two childhood friends were separated when Nora’s family emigrated from South Korea. Decades later, they reunite in New York. Nora has married an American, but their past friendship and issues changing identity make for an emotionally fraught week. 425 Portland Ave. S, Minneapolis (free)

Trailer Trash: Hail to the King

    Cinema of the Macabre

Trailer Trash: Hail to the King

Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Emagine Willow Creek, part of the Cinema of the Macabre series

Cinema of the Macabre has been serving up a fair amount Roger Corman recently. Things get a little weirder than usual on Wednesday with "Trailer Trash: Hail to the King." It’s billed as a lover letter to the late director and producer considered the king of B-movies.

The night is a “cinematic mixtape” of trailers, commercials, promos, snipes, and other oddities on 35mm. Some of the films shown in the mixtape are rare and hard to find. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($10)

    Goodfellas (1990)

Sunday, Aug. 25–Tuesday, Aug. 27 at the Trylon Cinema

There’s not a lot of uncovered territory when it comes to Goodfellas . It’s an iconic, often-imitated classic. If you’ve never seen it, it’s worth seeing it on the big screen. If you’ve seen it before but never on the big screen, it’s worth seeing it on the big screen. If you’ve already seen it on the big screen, it’s worth seeing it on the big screen, again.

The story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), who always wanted to be a wise guy, making the mistake of looking up to Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) is an essential, cynical look at the American Dream. It’s part of the Trylon’s “The Long Take” series for its unforgettable Copacabana Steadicam shot that follows Hill from the street, through the bowels of the building, and to the front of the stage as Henny Youngman takes the stage. 2820 E 33rd St., Minneapolis ($8)

Raising Arizona (1987) with pre-movie music by Cole Diamond

Thursday, Aug. 22 at the Parkway Theater

Between their revered masterpieces ( No Country for Old Men, Fargo ), their cult classics ( The Big Lebowski, O’ Brother Where Art Thou ), and their underappreciated gems ( Barton Fink, A Serious Man, Miller’s Crossing ) there are still very good Coen Brothers films that get forgotten ( Blood Simple, The Hudsucker Proxy ). Raising Arizona , their second film, sits among that latter category.

The Parkway is taking corrective action, shouting “Son, you’ve got a panty on your head” into the night and shining a light on Nicolas Cage’s bumbling criminal who, along with his policewoman wife, played by Holly Hunter, kidnaps a child after they find out they can’t have one of their own. The kid's family had quintuplets, so what do they care? Right? Go to the Parkway to support local artists, Joel and Ethan Coen. 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis

    The Cat Returns (2002)

Monday, Aug. 26, and Wednesday, Aug. 28 at various theaters (including AMC Southdale, Emagine Willow Creek, AMC Rosedale, AMC Eden Prairie, St. Michael Cinema, Emagine Eagan, and Mann Plymouth Grand 15)

A spin-off of Whisper of the Heart (also screening this week), The Cat Returns is hitting a handful of theaters in Minnesota this week as part of the ongoing Studio Ghibli Fest. In it, Haru, a high school student, has a hidden ability to speak to cats. She saves a cat from being hit by a car. Only this cat happens to be the prince of the Cat Kingdom. (Relatable.) An escalating series of gifts of appreciation finds Haru engaged to the prince, who, again, is a cat. Various theaters ($12–$15)

    Other movies screening this week:
