Open Streets Lyndale returns this week, the first of 3 scaled-down events

Open Streets Lyndale returns in Minneapolis this weekend, albeit a little later in the summer than the events generally have in the past.

On Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Lyndale Ave. will shut down from 22nd St. to 36th St. for the event that features more than 200 vendors, 40 food trucks and restaurants, live music, and a "Back to School Jam" at Painter Park at the southern end of the festival.

It's the first of three Open Streets in 2024, which follows a turbulent year concerning the organization and operation of the events.

Previously, the city partnered with Our Streets Minneapolis, which launched Open Streets in 2011 and ran the events. It controversially ended the partnership in 2023 after Our Streets requested funds to organize the events beyond what the city was willing to offer. Different neighborhood associations are taking the reins this year, each with a $50,000 budget.

The Uptown Association is running Open Streets Lyndale. The next Open Streets event, hosted by the West Broadway Business Coalition, will take place on Sept. 21, and the finale, Open Streets Nicollet, will be hosted by the Lyndale Neighborhood Association on Sept. 28.
