A Hennepin County judge has sentenced a man to more than 47 years in prison for killing two people in separate Minneapolis shootings less than a month apart.

Calon Markus Hatchett, 21, was sentenced to 567 months in prison in Hennepin County Court on Wednesday, after being convicted of murders of 26-year-old Ali Reed and 30-year-old Tonia Powell.

On June 25, 2023, Reed and his girlfriend encountered a group of three men near 21st Street East and Chicago Avenue South. As the groups crossed paths, Hatchett pulled a gun out and shot Reed, who died at the scene.

Reed's girlfriend was able to run away as Hatchett fired at her.

Then, on July 23, police responded to a shooting at an apartment building on the 3000 block of East 58th Street, and arrived to find Powell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Powell's girlfriend was also found in the apartment suffering from a gunshot wound. She underwent surgery and survived.

Law enforcement was able to tie Hatchett to the scene using firearms evidence, according to the criminal complaint.

Hatchett was also charged with attempted murder of the other two victims.

“My thoughts are with the victims who survived Mr. Hatchett’s crimes and with the families of Ali Reed and Tonia Powell, who did not," Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in a statement.

“It is a difficult fact of prosecution that no sentence can return what was lost for Mr. Hatchett’s victims or their loved ones, but the nearly 50 years on his sentence ensures he is unable to harm our community for decades."
