What's open and what's closed in Minnesota on Labor Day 2024

Labor Day falls on Monday, Sep. 2 this year. The unofficial end of summer, the holiday also means several closures. Many public buildings and services will be closed, and some stores may offer limited hours.

    Here’s what you should expect:

    Buses and trains

Metro Transit buses, light rail trains and the Red Line will run on the Sunday/holiday schedule, meaning less frequent service. North Star trains will not operate.

Meanwhile, Minnesota Valley Transit Authority will run its routes on a weekend schedule along with its State Fair shuttles. And Southwest Transit will not operate its normal service or State Fair service.

    Libraries

Libraries are closed on Labor Day. This includes major systems such as Hennepin County, Ramsey County , Dakota County , the Duluth Public Library , St. Paul Public Library and the Rochester Public Library .

    Government services

Labor Day is a federal holiday, so federal, state and local government offices and services are all largely closed.

    Parking

On-street parking meters are free in Minneapolis on Labor Day, though some spaces operated by other entities, including the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, may still be enforced. And the University of Minnesota does not enforce parking meters on holidays.

On-street parking meters are also free in St. Paul.

    Garbage collection

Since Labor Day takes place on Monday, garbage collection will be pushed back a day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul for the week.

    Big box stores

Generally, the best policy is to look up your specific store and check the hours. But since it's a big sales holiday, expect most stores to be open.

Target, Walmart, Best Buy and similar chains will be open, though they may close earlier than usual.

    Grocery stores

While it's best to check the hours of a specific store before going, here are a few to be aware of:

    Banks

As it's a federal holiday, almost all banks will be closed, but some locations inside grocery stores may have limited hours.

    Mail

Post offices are closed. UPS and FedEx will not have delivery or pick-up services, but both websites list "critical" services as available.

    Malls and shopping

Labor Day is a big shopping day, so most malls will be open. But expect some to have limited hours. Additionally, individual stores within the malls can set their own hours.
