One man was killed and multiple others were seriously injured in a campfire accident in northern Minnesota Friday night.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report of three people suffering from serious burns from "exploding flames" around 8:20 p.m. on the 12000 block of Jaranson Road, which is about 20 miles north of Hibbing.

At the scene, first responders learned that friends and family members had gathered to celebrate the holiday weekend when an “unknown flammable liquid” was used to start the fire.

The exploding flames resulted in burn and inhalation injuries to a total of eight people, ranging in ages from 14 to over 60 years old. Three of the victims suffered serious injuries, including a child who was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital.

One of the victims, a 53-year-old Hibbing man, died from his injuries.

The incident is currently under investigation.
