A public works director for the City of Brooklyn Park was arrested earlier this month in Atlanta, Georgia, on suspicion of sexual assault.

Daniel Ruiz, of St. Paul, is facing potential charges of rape, aggravated sodomy, battery, and false imprisonment for an incident that allegedly occurred on Sept. 8.

A warrant alleges he held a woman in a room at the Club Wyndham Atlanta Hotel against her will. When she attempted to escape, he pulled her back into the room and assaulted her, only allowing her to leave once he was finished.

The warrant claims that the victim had visible injuries to her wrists after the assault due to being pinned down.

Ruiz was arrested the same day and released on Sept. 17 after posting $80,000 in bail.

A city spokesperson confirmed to Bring Me The News that Ruiz remains a city employee, and is currently on family and medical leave.

"The City of Brooklyn Park is aware of the incident involving Operations and Maintenance Director Dan Ruiz," the spokesperson said. "Mr. Ruiz is currently on FMLA leave. City leadership is reviewing whether any city policies apply relative to this incident."

Ruiz has been an employee with the city since 2002, and was made permanent public works director in 2014.
