As former President Jimmy Carter became the first president to live to 100, a construction project in his honor welcomed country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood to St. Paul on Monday.

The weeklong Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project event is celebrating the Carters' legacy by launching Habitat for Humanity's new housing development on St. Paul's Greater East Side, called The Heights.

Brooks and Yearwood joined Carter's work project right after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and have worked alongside them the past 17 years. They are continuing their work following the death of former First Lady Carter last year, while former President Carter was placed into hospice care in Georgia 18 months ago.

The country power couple is working alongside more than 4,000 volunteers across Minnesota to jumpstart construction on St. Paul's newest housing development, with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity chosen as the host for the 2024 project because of its work to close the racial homeownership gap.

“To have the Carter Work Project come to St. Paul’s Greater East Side and jumpstart The Heights development is a significant honor for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and all of our homeowners, partners, supporters, and volunteers," said Chris Coleman, St. Paul's former mayor who is now president and CEO of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.

"It’s a privilege to host the flagship event for Habitat for Humanity International along with hosts Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who continue to carry on President and the late Mrs. Carter’s legacy."

The Heights is a 112-acre development that will eventually house 147 Habitat homes, making it the largest project ever undertaken by Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. The Carter Work Project crew is helping build the first 30 homes of the development this week.

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity will also host a public celebration for the Carter Work Project and honor President Jimmy Carter’s 100th nirthday at the Build Forward Bash on Tuesday at The Armory.

The concert is open to the public, with doors opening at 6 p.m., featuring performances by The Family Stone and St. Paul and the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars.

Property Brothers co-host Jonathan Scott will emcee the concert. The Build Forward Bash tickets are $15 each and can be purchased on the Twin Cities website .

"The Carter Work Project is an exciting chance to expand housing and homeownership opportunities in our city,” said Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter. “I’m grateful Habitat for Humanity chose The Heights this year, and I can’t wait to work alongside hundreds of volunteers to literally build the future of our East Side together.”
