A death-defying rescue operation was launched by authorities in the south Twin Cities metro on Thursday after a man climbed to the top of a 250-foot tall radio tower.

The unusual emergency unfolded on Thursday morning, with police saying a "male in crisis" had scaled the Salem Media Group tower off of Cliff Road.

It sparked a response from various emergency services, including the Dakota County Special Operations Team, which deployed a "high angle rope rescue" to bring the man back down to the ground.

Pictures shared by Eagan Police Department show the DC-SOT officer climbing the tower to reach the man, later identified as a 51-year-old from Moorhead, and bring him safely to the ground.

The man was taken to a local hospital, here he was being treated for cold exposure.

"Thank you to all first responders on scene who assisted in bringing this situation to a safe ending," Eagan PD said.
