Two drivers, one of them a 15-year-old boy, were killed in a head-on crash in Rosemount Monday afternoon.

The Dakota County Sheriff's Office says the collision happened around 3:30 p.m. on County Road 46 near Biscayne Avenue, when a 2012 Ford Fusion driven by 15-year-old David Rosas, of Rosemount, was following a semi truck when he pulled into the westbound lane to overtake.

Coming the opposite direction was a 2014 Lincoln driven by 81-year-old Dennis Dahlstrom of Champaign, Illinois. Each driver swerved onto the north shoulder at the same time in an attempt to avoid collision, but instead struck each other.

Both Rosas and Dahlstrom suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Dahlstrom's 78-year-old wife, Sandra, suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized.

Police say Rosas was in a "no-passing zone" when he commenced the overtake maneuver.

"In this tragedy, there were several heroic citizens that stopped to render aid to the victims before first responders arrived," the sheriff's office said.

It is illegal for 15-year-olds to drive a vehicle in Minnesota unless in possession of either an instruction permit and accompanied by an adult aged 21 or above, or in possession of a farm permit and are driving within 20 miles of the farm for work purposes.

    The crash investigation continues.
