A St. Louis County inmate escaped from jail on Thursday only to be found and arrested in Hibbing a day later.

The 33-year-old man was initially arrested for felony domestic assault by strangulation and was being held on $100,000 bail.

He had been seen at the Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing on Thursday after telling jail staff that he was having chest pains. While at the hospital, he was being guarded by a St. Louis County deputy.

Once he was cleared to return to the St. Louis County Jail, the inmate escaped on foot.

An extensive search began in the Hibbing area, and the search effort included multiple agencies, including the Hibbing Police Department, Chisholm Police Department, Eveleth Police Department, and the Minnesota State Patrol.

The inmate was finally found and arrested again on Friday, around 10:30 a.m. He was taken into custody by the Hibbing Police Department and transferred back to the St. Louis County jail. Additional charges of escaping from custody are currently pending.
