BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — One Rhode Islander cashed in a big lottery prize this week, months after the ticket was originally purchased.

A Bristol man recently noticed a $1 million Mega Millions prize from the drawing on Feb. 2 had not yet been claimed, according to the R.I. Lottery .

The winning ticket was bought at the Stop & Shop on Metacom Avenue , and since he had bought tickets from there he figured he should check.

Luckily for him, he was the winner and he now plans to use the money towards his retirement.

Lottery winners have a year to claim their prize. Any that go unclaimed get turned over to the state’s general fund.
