Chicago is a protest town
As the city prepares to host next week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC)—which social justice organizers have long been preparing actions around—art organizations are doing their part to contemplate the intersection of politics and protest. Gertie, a local cultural convener, will host Next Stop: Chicago, a public art series that aims to highlight infrastructure inequity along the Green Line. “It’s about activating around the time when there are going to be a lot of eyes on the city,” Gertie founder Abby Pucker explains. For the project, Gertie provided grants to long-standing cultural institutions on the south and west sides to realize or help support placemaking projects. “People have a very specific narrative of Chicago—especially media and media from outside of Chicago—that they want to talk about, and that doesn’t always align with the story that exists here and that people want to be telling here.” Here are our recommendations for protest-related art offerings that provide a more holistic view of our city, timed to an event that “the whole world is watching.”
