BRODHEAD, Wis. — Junior right-hander Ava Risum was in total control in the pitcher’s circle in Friday’s season opener and Brodhead needed her to be.

The Cardinals defeated Whitewater 1-0 when Leah Rear doubled leading off the bottom of the seventh inning and an out later Sophia Leitzen scored her with a walk-off RBI double to center.

Risum pitched her first career complete game no-hitter, walking none and striking out 12. The Whippets’ only baserunner came via a Brodhead error and was erased in a double play.

Jaelyn Hilliard was 2-for-2 for the Cardinals, but they only had one other single by Tessa Kloepping before the two doubles in their final at-bat. Savannah O’neal was Whitewater’s hard-luck losing pitcher.

Dating back to last season’s WIAA Division state championship season, Brodhead posted its eighth consecutive shutout.
