    Brodhead pitcher Ava Risum earns national award

    Brodhead junior pitcher Ava Risum has been named a MaxPreps/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week for games played April 22-28.

    Risum posted a 3-0 record, tossed a no-hitter and two one-hit shutouts. She struck out 34, walked two and surrendered two hits over 17 innings of work.

    Risum no-hit Edgerton with 12 strikeouts and one walk in a five-inning win. She held Evansville (five innings) and Beloit Turner to one hit apiece with 12 and 10 strikeouts, respectively.

    The Cardinal was torrid at the plate as well. She batted .667 (6-for-9) with four doubles, five RBI and six runs scored.

    • THEISEN REACHES MILESTONE: Clinton junior pitcher Ashley Theisen recorded her 500th high school strikeout in a doubleheader with Cambridge and Whitewater.

    The right-hander had 32 strikeouts in the two games, with 19 coming in a perfect game against Cambridge.

    • WIAA PLAYOFFS BEGIN: Parkview’s girls get the postseason underway Thursday when the ninth-seeded Vikings play at No. 8 Wisconsin Heights at 5 p.m. in WIAA Division 4.

    Four local teams play WIAA Division 3 regional openers on Tuesday. Top-seeded Brodhead will host the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 9 Monticello-New Glarus and No. 8 Columbus.

    Also Thursday, No. 6 Beloit Turner is at No. 3 Marshall, No. 5 Big Foot is at No. 4 Lodi and No. 7 Clinton is at No. 2 Poynette.
