J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue to hold "Exotic Pet Surrender Event"

BRODHEAD, Wis. -- Do you have an exotic pet you are no longer able to care for? J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue announced Saturday it will host the "Exotic Pet Surrender Event," where local organizations will take in surrendered animals.

J&R said the organizations at the event will accept fish, invertebrates, reptiles, birds, small mammals, and plants. Domestic pets, such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs, and chickens will not be accepted. Wisconsin native animals that were taken from the wild will not be accepted.

To ensure the safety of animals and staff, J&R said surrendered animals must arrive in a secure, waterproof, escape-proof container that the organizations can keep. Releasing exotic pets into the wild can be harmful for both the environment and the animal.

J&R said surrendered animals will be available for adoption after a mandatory quarantine and evaluation period, and will not be available for adoption at the event. The event will also feature a photo booth and group of animal ambassadors, providing fun educational opportunities for guests to learn about and interact with rescued animals.

J&R said the surrender will be held on July 27, from 12-3 p.m. at the Three Waters Reserve, in Brodhead. For more information on the event, visit J&R's Facebook event page .
