Disagree with that 13% increase in your home’s taxable value? The deadline to challenge nears
ROCKFORD — Home and business owners across Winnebago County were greeted this summer with another double-digit increase to the taxable value of their property. The taxable value of all property across Winnebago County increased more than 13% this year to a record high $7.27 billion, according to the Winnebago County Supervisor of Assessments. That comes after an 11% increase in 2023, and it’s the third consecutive year of record-high values in the county.
Things to do in Madison: Orton Park Festival, Camp Aldo and more
The Black Business Hub at 2352 S. Park St. has been open for business for months, offering a variety of local shops and resources for entrepreneurs. But on Saturday, the Urban League of Greater Madison will make it official. The Hub’s ribbon cutting ceremony starts at 12:30 p.m., followed by music, refreshments and an atrium full of vendors and information from 1:30-5 p.m. The event is a complement to the annual Unity Picnic, which takes place across the parking lot at the organization’s headquarters, 2222 S. Park St., from 12-5 p.m.
Girls swimming: Verona eyeing Big Eight, postseason titles
The hunt to win the Big Eight Conference and state championships could be a barnburner once again between two of the state’s top teams this season. Verona, which finished as the WIAA Division 1 state runner-up last year, returns 11 swimmers from a team that brought home a silver trophy. Rival Middleton is the defending Division 1 and conference champion.
Girls swimming: Oregon eyes conference, state success
The Oregon girls swimming team will be in the hunt for a Badger Large Conference championship with six swimmers back who qualified for state last year. Junior Alyse Block returns after finishing as the WIAA Division 1 state runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (22.38) and 100 free (50.18). Both were school records. Block has 15 school records, including five of the eight individual records. She was named the Badger Large Conference Swimmer of the Year and named All-State in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 individual medley relay and 400 free relay. She was the conference champion in the 50 free and 100 free.
Girls swimming: State silver medalist Cheyenne Borroughs to lead Stoughton
The Stoughton girls swimming team returns two state qualifiers who are aiming to kick the Vikings back to state. Junior Cheyenne Borroughs finished as the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke. She was .01 of a second away from a gold medal in the breaststroke and .05 of a second away from a title in the 50 free.

Bomb Threat Received By Lancaster Police Department and Grant County Sheriff’s Office
On Tuesday, just prior to 4:00 PM, the Lancaster Police Department and Grant County Sheriff’s Department were notified that a message was sent to the suicide hotline that the courthouse was going to be bombed in 30 minutes and the person would then shoot up the courthouse with a handgun after that. Additionally, there was a vehicle description given. Both agencies responded and provided additional security in and around the courthouse. There was no matching vehicle present upon arrival or anytime prior to report. Nothing suspicious in nature was discovered. The courthouse had been staffed with courthouse security throughout the day with nothing suspicious observed. This incident is believed to likely be a “swatting” incident. Swatting is the action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address. Law enforcement takes reports of this nature seriously whether it is believed to be swatting or not. Oregon football trying to flip 4-star USC commit Shamar Arnoux
Dan Lanning and Oregon football have one of the best recruiting classes in the country for 2025, ranked No. 10 as of Aug. 21. But obviously the Ducks aren't done yet. Every year, recruiting classes range from between 20-25 players and that's so these schools can make room for the transfer portal additions as well. Oregon currently has 15 players committed in its 2025 class, led by five-stars Dakorien Moore and Trey McNutt.
Swimming: Stoughton grads help Waves to best-ever All-City finish
It was a big moment for many members of the Goodman Waves Swim and Dive Team as the scores from the 62nd annual All-City Swim Meet were announced. After a three-day long championship meet – which concluded on Saturday, Aug. 3 – the Waves racked up 895 points to take 10th place overall, the highest in the team’s 13-year history. Ridgewood won the team title with 2,637 points, just edging out Middleton.
