Scuba instructor shares ways to keep your kids safe while swimming

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — In this heat it's important to stay cool and that could mean a trip to the pool, but there are things you need to keep in mind to stay safe while having fun.

FOX23 spoke to the owner of Scuba Savvy in Broken Arrow, Chad Bailey, and learned what you need to know.

With water and swimming, you may think you've got it all figured out, but things can turn dangerous in a matter of just seconds.

"It could lead to death, obviously or at least permanent brain damage. It does not take very long and you get in a good conversation with someone with your back to the water and a child who has taken water in their lungs is not making noise," Bailey said.

Bailey shared ways you can monitor your child around the water at a community pool or your own pool at home.

“There have to be ground rules set around a pool where a lot of times, again, I think people get complacent and like ‘well, our kids run and play around the pool,' and it's not until an incident happens they're like 'oh, we probably should've limited that,” Bailey said.

There's a lot more to do than just developing rules for your children.

Bailey suggested not keeping toys in your pool because children are attracted to them.

He also suggested learning CPR and first aid and always having your phone to call 911.

Bailey said it's very easy for both children and adults to get distracted around the water.

"It's very easy to get focused on doing something else because we think 'oh, we want our pool to be fun, we don't want it to be tied down to too many rules'. However, all it takes is one incident for that event to turn into an unfun event," Bailey said.

He also recommends your child taking swimming lessons.

Scuba Savvy provides lessons for all ages.

"Our primary goal is to give kids the tools to be safe around the water, to make good decisions around it and that will allow them to also have fun around the water with reasonable degree that were without incident,” Bailey said.
