Low water pressure results in Bronson boil water advisory for four block area until July 4

BRONSON — City manager Brandon Mersman said Tuesday morning that the city will not be able to lift its boil water advisory until at least July 4.

The city of Bronson issued a boil water advisory Monday afternoon for about a four-block area in the southwest downtown section after system operators detected low water pressure caused by complications during a service line repair.

Mersman said one home’s water sample taken Monday showed bacteria. The city drew a second test on Tuesday.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy requires tests 24 hours apart. Mersman said, “The City needs two negative tests in a row to lift the advisory.”

The city warned those in the affected area not to drink any city water without boiling it first until further notice.

The area under the boil water alert consists of:

    • All of South Douglass Street
    • Compton Street Between Walker and Douglass streets
    • S. Walker Street – the 100 and 200 block between Compton Street and U.S. 12.
    • Homes at 130 and 149 Corey St.
    • Along U.S. 12 -West Chicago Street at 139, the First Congregational Church, Edward Jones at 216, a home at 245, and Five Start Pizza at 307.

There are just under 50 homes in the boil water area.

In a press release, Mersman said, "Due to a drop in pressure in this area, bacteria contamination may have occurred in the water system."

Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food.

Five Star Pizza is the only business in the boil water area and is closed on Mondays.

Mersman said, "Corrective measures are currently being undertaken."

Bronson Public Works and water staff are flushing and collecting water/bacteriological samples from around the city water system.

This boil water notice will remain in effect until results from the sampling verify the water is safe to drink.

While there is no immediate danger from bacteria, state health and environmental officials recommend precautionary measures whenever a water system loses pressure for a significant length of time.
