Yankees DFA Victor Gonzalez, call up Yoendrys Gomez and Phil Bickford from Triple-A

The Yankees have made another bullpen shakeup after Thursday’s loss, designating LHP Victor Gonzalez for assignment and calling up RHPs Phil Bickford and Yoendrys Gomez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

DFA’ing Gonzalez opened up both a 26-man and 40-man spot for Bickford, and the Yankees had an open 26-man spot for Gomez after optioning RHP Ron Marinaccio to Triple-A Thursday night.

Bickford, 28, signed a minor-league deal after being released by the Mets at the end of spring training, and was 2-2 with a 2.92 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings over 22 appearances.

He split last season with the Dodgers and Mets, pitching to a 4.95 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 67 1.3 innings over 61 appearances. For his career, he has a 443 ERA in 179 games with the Brewers, Dodgers, and Mets.

Gomez, the Yankees’ No. 17 prospect per MLB, had been starting in Triple-A, where he had posted a 3.13 ERA in 46 innings. He made his MLB debut late last season and one relief appearance earlier this year, throwing a total of three scoreless innings.

His ability to give length is likely just as important as the fresh arm, as the Yankees got just four innings out of Gerrit Cole Wednesday and 1 1/3 out of Luis Gil Thursday. The Yankees used six actual relievers behind both Cole and Gil, with Marinaccio and Gonzalez both pitching both days, and used catcher Jose Trevino to pitch the ninth on Thursday.

Hill and Michael Tonkin both threw 27 pitches Thursday, Tommy Kahnle and Caleb Ferguson have both pitched two days in a row, and Clay Holmes had pitched both Tuesday and Wednesday, so the Yankees might need that length from Gomez this weekend.

Gonzalez was acquired from the Dodgers in December with Jorbit Vivas for Trey Sweeney and hoped the 28-year-old could be their new “Magic” Wandy (Peralta), but after allowing two runs on three hits in the eighth inning Thursday, his Yankee tenure ended with a 3.86 ERA, just 11 strikeouts against 13 walks in 23 1/3 innings, and a 5.14 ERA in June.

Marinaccio, who has had multiple stints in the Bigs this year, has a 2.84 ERA in 19 appearances after allowing just one unearned run in Thursday’s loss.

The Yankees have now shuffled their bullpen multiple times since Tuesday; they signed Hill on Thursday and now add Gomez and Bickford to replace Marinaccio and Gonzalez, and have also cycled through LHPs Anthony Misiewicz and Clayton Andrews and lost Ian Hamilton to the IL.
