Woman shot in back while sitting in car in Soundview

A woman is recovering after she was shot in a car in the Bronx early Monday morning.

The victim was talking to friends in a car at East 174th Street and Commonwealth Avenue in the Soundview section at around 1:40 a.m.

The 25-year-old woman was shot in her right shoulder. She was taken to Jacobi Hospital where she was treated and released and was able to return to work on Monday.

She told Eyewitness News that she was grazed by the bullet. She heard popping noises and then felt a burning sensation but never saw anyone with a gun.

The rear windshield of the vehicle was shattered.

There are few businesses on the block and police were searching for surveillance video to figure out a possible motive.

One resident told Eyewitness News she was stunned to see the violence spill onto her street.

"It's scary, there's so much violence in the world today and it's just freighting," said the neighbor who did not want to be identified. "Aside from loud music which happens every weekend, it's relatively safe. I've been here for over 40 years and there's only one shooting that I know of on this block in the 1990s. It's been pretty quiet pretty safe."

So far, no arrests have been made.

According to statistics from the NYPD, there were 12 shootings so far this year in the precinct compared to 10 for the same time in 2023.
