Ben Rice Does The Unthinkable On Saturday

Every team has its highs and lows throughout the season, and the New York Yankees have reached their low point. After starting the season on a tear and sitting at the top of the AL East, the Pinstripes have dropped 14 of their last 19 games and are now 2.5 games back of the Baltimore Orioles.

During these low points, teams are always looking for that one game or player to help provide a spark, and that is exactly what the Yankees got against the Boston Red Sox. Yankees’ rookie Ben Rice came up massive, blasting three home runs to help secure a 14-4 win over their rival.

Rice got the game started with a solo moonshot on the fifth pitch of the game. He capped off a seven-run fifth inning with a three-run homer and then drilled another three-run shot in the seventh inning for his seventh RBI of the day.

Rice finished the day with five at-bats, three hits, three runs, three homers, and seven RBIs. He becomes the first Yankee rookie to finish a game with three home runs.

Rice emerged on the scene after filling in for first baseman Anthony Rizzo , who fractured his arm and is on the 60-day IL. The 25-year-old has taken advantage of his time in the majors, posting a .294 BA, four homers, and 12 RBIs in 17 games.

The Yankees may not be out of the water yet just because of one win in five games, but it is something to build on if a team is going to go through a rough patch the Yankees “picked” a good time to. The All-Star break is in a week and a half so they will be able to use this break to get back on track.

New York will wrap up their series against the Red Sox on Sunday and begin a six-game road trip against Tampa Bay and Baltimore.
