City leaders reported on Wednesday that subway crime has dropped across New York City by 8% for 2024 and even more for just this past month. However, a closer look at the numbers shows that this isn't the exact case in the Bronx. According to city statistics, transit crime has increased by 9.4% in the last year across the borough. This comes as Mayor Eric Adams announced that weapon detectors will be rolled out at select subway stations in just some days.
MORE: Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul say subway crime continues to decrease News 12 spoke with some commuters that say they haven't felt the subways to be any safer in their home city. "Subways are definitely getting a lot more dangerous. The MTA is doing as much as they possibly can in order to fix it, but I guess they could just up security. Security could probably do something," said one concerned commuter. NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said he believed that newer technology like subway security cameras played a role in lowering citywide crime. NYPD officials also said bag checks have been conducted with the help of the National Guard and state officials. "
