Yankees willing to trade top prospect at deadline to land elite aces, per insider

The New York Yankees may find themselves open to dealing one of their top prospects at the MLB trade deadline if it means landing another ace.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports , the Yankees are "willing to include No. 1 prospect Spencer Jones in a trade for White Sox ace Garrett Crochet or Tigers Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal."

This is a pretty big change of tune from the Yankees. Jones is one of their most regarded prospects other than fellow outfielder Jasson Dominguez.

But if it means adding a talent like Crochet or Skubal to the pitching staff, it's a deal that general manager Brian Cashman has to consider.

Adding to the starting rotation isn't the biggest need for the Yankees at the deadline, but it's certainly a position that would welcome an upgrade.

Despite starting the season with an MLB-best 2.78 ERA through June 14, regression has hit the unit incredibly hard. Since June 15, the Yankees have an MLB-worst 6.20 ERA from their starting rotation.

The narrative surrounding Crochet is one that requires nuance. He's already surpassed more innings this season than he had in his three seasons combined prior to 2024. A move to the bullpen seems likely.

However, he's 25 years old and under team control for the next two seasons. He also leads MLB in strikeouts and earned his first All-Star nod this season.

Skubal is unlikely to be dealt at the deadline unless they get an overwhelming package. It's one the Yankees should consider if it means landing the Cy Young favorite.

It remains to be seen what kind of tone Cashman will set at the deadline. Will he be uber-aggressive or make more low-key moves?

Either way, Jones could be on the move if it means landing a top pitcher to add to the rotation.
