Gio more worried than ever that Yankees could historically collapse and miss playoffs

Last week, Gio expressed concern that the Yankees could actually miss the playoffs after posting the best record in baseball for the first two months of the season.

After Tuesday’s loss to the Mets, Gio’s concerns have only grown, and he believes the Bombers are in danger of an all-time collapse, one that he says would be even worse than the Mets blowing a seven game lead with 17 to go in 2007.

“I’m even more concerned than I was the other day,” Gio said. “The pitching is bad. The lineup outside of Soto and Judge is really bad. The bullpen is okay. Defensively, they’ve made a ton of mistakes. Just sloppy all around.”

The Yanks looked like a machine two months ago, as the addition of Juan Soto seemed to pay dividends across the entire lineup. But Alex Verdugo went ice cold, as did Anthony Volpe up until the All-Star break, and Giancarlo Stanton went down with an all-too-familiar lower body injury. Now, the Yankees are up by just three games in the loss column in the Wild Card race.

“You didn’t trade for Juan Soto to be a Wild Card and get knocked out of the playoffs,” Gio said. “This is supposed to be a World Series season for them after missing the playoffs last year and all the crap they talked coming into this season.”

Could the Yankees actually flatline so badly to the point where they would miss the playoffs for a second straight season, even in an extended playoff field with three Wild Card spots? Stugotz says there are still 59 games left to turn things around, but Gio says that is also more time to continue the freefall.

“When you see how bad they’ve been for an extended period of time and look at the makeup of this team,” Gio said. “You’re thinking, ‘How can they figure it out and get to an ALCS at the very least?’”
