Yankees veteran's comments on switching positions shows he's not a team player

New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres.

Gleyber Torres has had a rough 2024 season both offensively and defensively.

The New York Yankees two-time All-Star is slashing a paltry .237/.313/.368 and leads all MLB second basemen in errors for the second straight year with 13.

With the Yankees trading for center fielder/second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on Saturday, Torres may soon find himself switching positions.

Following New York's 8-2 win against the Boston Red Sox on "Sunday Night Baseball," the 27-year-old told media members that he wouldn't be happy about moving to a different spot on the diamond, especially if it's the hot corner.

This stands in stark contrast to Chisholm Jr.'s words about potentially seeing time at third base.

"I could go and play anywhere and help my team win," the former Miami Marlins All-Star said, according to an ESPN report . "For me, it's just going somewhere. Especially a winning team, and they're asking me to go somewhere to help them win? I'm definitely gonna go out there and do it."

Per the report, Torres — who's in the final year of his contract with the Yankees — hasn't played third base since a "brief stint" in the minor leagues in 2018.

Despite his displeasure in the possible switch, Torres said that in "a couple days" he would practice at the position "just in case" so he's "kind of ready for anything."

"I want (Chisholm Jr.) to start working there," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "It's not something he's played, obviously. (He) came up as a shortstop — feel like he has the skill set to do it. I know he's open to doing it, but I want to see how that looks."

The New York newcomer debuted with the Bronx Bombers in center field on Sunday against the Red Sox. With the team expected to activate Giancarlo Stanton from the injured list on Monday, however, he'll likely jump back in with Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo and Juan Soto in an outfield rotation.

Regardless of how Torres finishes out the 2024 campaign, Sunday night's words surely won't win him any new fans in a notoriously difficult place to play in New York.
