Another potential heat wave is on the way later this week, and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson addressed the need for lifeguards to stay at the city’s beaches for longer. Gibson sat down with News 12’s Amanda Bossard on Monday night to address this concern during the Ask The Borough President show.
MORE: Ask the Bronx Borough President: July 2024 This comes after two sisters from the Bronx drowned while swimming at Coney Island just after the Fourth of July. It happened after hours when lifeguards were off-duty Lifeguard hours are currently from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the city’s beaches, and swimming is prohibited outside of these hours. However, with the sun high in the sky until 8 p.m. or later and beaches still open to sit on, it’s a hard rule to enforce. Gibson is calling for lifeguards to be on duty for two more hours until 8 p.m. when the sun is usually set. She says this is of paramount importance with the fourth heat wave of the summer expected to arrive later this week. "
