Jazz Chisholm not sweating character concerns in Yankees transition

Before Jazz Chisholm Jr. got to the Yankees, his reputation around the game was primarily that he was a talented, athletic player, but that he also had a big personality that could be an issue within a clubhouse.

He also feuded with former Miami teammate Miguel Rojas.

General manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday that he and his staff “did a lot of research” on Chisholm before going through with the trade from Miami.

“Ultimately, after our deep dive, we felt like he’d fit in really well and would be a really perfect piece to allow our manager Aaron Boone to deploy him,’’ Cashman said.

Despite the noise surrounding him , Chisholm said he hadn’t been concerned about how he might be welcomed by his new teammates in The Bronx or the fact that he may not be popular among all his ex-teammates.

Juan Soto’s ex-hitting coach Kevin Long believes Yankees are ‘good fit’

“No, for me, I just wanted to come here, help the team win, be myself and don’t change anything,’’ Chisholm said in Philadelphia, after he helped spark a three-game sweep of the first-place Phillies.

“I’m just going to go about things the way I always have,’’ Chisholm said. “All the news and all the other stuff came from guys that didn’t even like me.”

The issue stemmed in part from Chisholm’s comments about an unnamed “team captain” in Miami, which was Rojas when the two played together from 2020-22.

“You can’t be a team leader when you’ve got guys that’s been in the clubhouse that’s been in there nine or 10 years even though they suck,” Chisholm said on The Pivot podcast in March. “They’ve been there for nine or 10 years and the team calls them the team captain. But they’re not a good captain, they’re not a good person, you’re not even a good athlete at this point.”

Rojas answered on “The Chris Rose Rotation” podcast, “Saying that I’m a bad person when you don’t even know me, that’s kind of what bothers me.”

Chisholm, though, said that he’s had good relationships with nearly all his past teammates.

Yankees trade talks weren’t hampered by farm system

“I didn’t feel I had to say anything when I got here because it’s very rare that someone doesn’t get along with me,” Chisholm said. “I feel like I’m a nice guy. It was probably just one or two guys in Miami. Any other teammates know I’m not a guy to cause trouble, make trouble or pick trouble. I felt I could come here and just be myself. And I feel like I’ve been doing that and they’ve accepted me. It’s going great.”

He added he had relationships with current Yankees Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Marcus Stroman and Alex Verdugo.

“I knew they’d have my back,’’ Chisholm said.

Certainly, his play has made the transition easier, since the results have been overwhelmingly positive in the early going.

In four games since coming to the Yankees, Chisholm is 7-for-19 with four homers and played well at third base, despite never having played the position prior to the trade.

And his hot stretch has coincided with the team’s best stretch in nearly two months.

It’s what Judge expected when the Yankees picked him up, since Judge did some of his own research.

Judge said he spoke with Chisholm a few times in the past and he also talked to some of Chisholm’s old coaches and teammates and came away impressed.

“The No. 1 thing at the trade deadline you don’t want to mess up is the clubhouse,’’ Judge said. “I’ve known Jazz a little for a few years, and talked to him and other guys about him. All I got back was positive things. The most important thing it kept coming back to was ‘He wants to win.’ ”

That wasn’t happening with the Marlins.

“Guys told me he’s in a situation right now [in Miami] where he’s not winning, so it could be tough,’’ Judge said. “So we knew if we could get him over here in this clubhouse, in this environment, it’s gonna be a good fit. That’s what we’ve seen so far. He’s a great kid and a competitor. That’s what I love.”
