Yankees shortstop discusses Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s fit with club

It was reported last month that some individuals within the New York Yankees had concerns about how star utilityman Jazz Chisholm Jr. (then of the Miami Marlins) would fit in as a member of New York's clubhouse.

The Yankees nevertheless acquired Chisholm ahead of the final Sunday of July and shortstop Anthony Volpe has been nothing but impressed by what he's thus far seen from his new teammate.

"It’s been amazing," Volpe said about Chisholm during a recent chat with Scott Thompson of Fox News Digital. "He’s a baller. The fact that he showed off that early, and he’s so excited to be a part of the team. His energy is so infectious as it is, but we’re so happy to get him."

Since coming over to the Bronx, Chisholm has cracked four home runs with eight RBI over his first four games with a Yankees side that was in the middle of a summer funk heading into last Saturday's matchup at the rival Boston Red Sox. The 65-45 Bronx Bombers have since won five straight games and will go into Friday's series opener versus the Toronto Blue Jays (50-59) tied with the Baltimore Orioles atop the American League East standings.

"I can’t speak for him, but I just know that for me personally our clubhouse is so good and so welcoming, and it helps people play their best no matter who you are," Volpe said about the Yankees embracing Chisholm. "From the first time he came in, I feel like he hopefully felt that. Obviously, having [Aaron] Judge being our captain, he’s the best at, I think, everything. But I think with fitting in new people and being personable, especially quickly, and making them feel like they’re a real part of the team and part of the family. That’s how we look at it, and it helps a lot of people do their best."

The Yankees landing All-Star outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres last December put New York in even more of a win-now mode than normal, as Soto is set to reach free agency after the World Series. As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Yankees third among the betting favorites at +550 odds to win this year's Fall Classic.

Volpe understandably isn't thinking that far ahead and instead is hyped to see Chisholm make his Yankee Stadium pinstripes debut on Friday night coming off the club's road trip.

"I’m really excited to see the reception he gets [at Yankee Stadium] – I know the fans are going to love him," Volpe added about Chisholm. "They already do."
