Kalmbach Media sells Town of Brookfield property for $6.5 million to California company

Kalmbach Media sold its property in the Town of Brookfield to a California-based packaging company for $6.6 million.

Silgan Containers, which specializes in metal food packaging, finalized the purchase of the lot on Wednesday which includes a two story building with 57,750 square feet.

Kalmbach Media and Silgan Containers have not responded to requests for comment.

Silgan Containers has facilities all over the country, but it has multiple facilities in Wisconsin including in Kenosha, Menomonee Falls, Menomonie, Oconomowoc and Plover.

Kalmbach Media has been going through several changes in recent months.

In May, the 90-year-old Wisconsin publisher sold several of its magazines to Firecrown Media based in Chattanooga.

Kalmbach was responsible for publishing Model Railroader, Trains, Astronomy and other niche magazines.

Kalmbach Media will retain its online Discover Magazine, focused on science news, and Saturn Lounge, its digital marketing agency.

Around 67 of the company's 120 employees are affected by the sale and will continue to be based in Wisconsin, according to Kalmbach CEO Dan Hickey.

"The decision to sell was based on our belief that in today's highly competitive media landscape, our niche brands need a company with greater resources and scale to help the brands grow and thrive. In Firecrown, we found a good home for our brands," Hickey said in early May.
