Heat indices, stress conditions increase Monday

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns there is an elevated risk of heat stress in Lincoln County and southwest Mississippi. Heat stress conditions can continue into Tuesday and a heat advisory is in effect from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

High temperatures in Brookhaven could reach 94 degrees with a heat index of 101. There is a 30 percent chance of rain and a west by northwest wind will blow around 5 mph or less. Tonight’s low will be 74 and clear skies allowing some of the heat to escape the surface. The high for Brookhaven will fall short of the record high temperature on June 24 set in 1897 at 101 degrees. The forecasted warm low will not crack the top five in the record books.

Tuesday will have a 40 percent chance of rain, a high of 96 degrees and heat index reaching a maximum of 106. The record high for June 25 was 101 set in 1969. Be sure to stay hydrated, stay cool and check on neighbors.

Wednesday temperatures will fall to 93 degrees with a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms. Thursday has the same chance of rain.

Friday through Sunday has 30 to 40 percent chances of rain.

According to the National Weather Service, we are in a four day consecutive streak of temperatures reaching 90 degrees or greater. The record for consecutive days of 90 degree temps was 69 set in 1951 when the streak was snapped on September 9.

Currently, there are no tropical disturbances in the Atlantic region and tropical cyclone activity is not expected for the next 48 hours nor the next seven days.
