BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service warns heat stress conditions could be elevated early this week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can beat the heat by avoiding strenuous activity outdoors, staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks if working outside.

A cool break is coming later this week as chances of rain increase into the weekend. Until then, conditions outside will be hot and muggy. Brookhaven will be under a heat advisory Tuesday like it was Monday.

High temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday could reach 95 and 96 respectively and with a decent chance of rain the humidity could spike heat indices. Tuesday’s heat index is forecast to be 103. There is a 30 percent chance of rain in the afternoon Tuesday.

Wednesday’s forecast calls for 50 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms after 1 p.m.

Thursday’s forecast calls for a 9o percent chance of rain and temperatures reaching 92 degrees. Friday’s rain chances is also 90 percent with a high of 86 degrees. Saturday’s high will only reach 89 degrees.

If the temperatures fail to reach 90 degrees Friday or Saturday it would snap a streak of days with temperatures 90 degrees or greater. As of July 5, the streak of 90 degree days was 19 according to NWS Jackson.

At this time, no tropical cyclone activity is forecast in the Atlantic Ocean for the next seven days. The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida provides updated graphics and information on tropical storm development and hurricanes.
