BROOKHAVEN — Police Chief Kenny Collins said the United States Marshal Service is assisting in the search for a 14-year-old suspect who shot and killed a 23-year-old man in June. Brookhaven Police Department initially gave the family time to turn the suspect in.

United States Marshal Service confirmed they were assisting Brookhaven Police Department with the case but did have any additional information. At this time, no identifying name nor description of the suspect has been given.

Collins said the suspect could be anywhere and must have gotten help due to his age.  He added Brookhaven Police Department will work with any agency they can to bring the juvenile in.

“Hopefully we will get him sooner or later,” Collins said. “If we find out that someone is assisting the suspect then we will charge them. We are actively looking for him. He could be anywhere, you just never know.”

The deadly shooting occurred near apartments at 209 Pennington Street on June 22. Lincoln County Coroner Blake Wallace identified the victim as William Young. Wallace told The Daily Leader Saturday night it is believed an altercation led to the shooting. Collins added the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in an interview on June 23..

Since Jan. 1, 2024, Brookhaven has had five shootings.
