BROOKHAVEN — Heavy localized rainfall Friday and Saturday could cause flash flooding in southwest Mississippi including Brookhaven and Lincoln County. The National Weather Service issued a statement about the threat Friday morning.

According to NWS Jackson, 3-4 inches of rainfall Friday and Saturday, with locally higher amounts, could cause flash flooding. The threat is considered a limited threat at this time.

Localized flash flooding could be possible in low lying areas, creeks and urban areas. NWS Jackson reminds drivers to turn around and don’t drown if they encounter a flooded roadway. Floodwaters could have swept out the road or sweep a vehicle off of the roadway.

Heavy rain potential could continue into next week.

The chance of rain for Friday to next Wednesday is 90 percent. Rain chances are forecast to be 80 percent next Thursday. High temperatures will be in the high 80s, a welcomed break from high temperatures in the 90s and heat indices around 105.

While every day has a chance of showers and thunderstorms, there is no other forecasted severe weather threats.
