Lincoln County under a heat advisory

BROOKHAVEN — Rain and cooler temperatures are in the past now. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Tuesday and it is likely each day this week will have one.

NWS Jackson advises area residents to drink plenty of water, stay in air conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on family and neighbors. Temperatures could get up to the upper 90s this week with heat indices between 110 to 115 degrees Wednesday to Saturday. Heat stroke is increasingly likely in conditions like that.

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are all forecast to have highs of 97 degrees. Tuesday’s high is 96 degrees with a warm low of 75 degrees. Neither temperature will set a record but it will be hot.

“Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing,” NWS Jackson warns. “Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

Brookhaven does not have any cooling shelters but residents can find splash pads at several different parks. Brookhaven City Park, located at 364 Hartman Street, has a splash pad, Bethel Park, located at 207 Fulton Street, and Centennial Park, located at 202 Main Street, have splash pads open to the public.
