    Area Class B girls & boys, Class A girls begin play in state high school golf tournaments

    BROOKINGS — Clark-Willow Lake freshman Brynn Roehrich is only three shots off the lead after the opening day of the state Class B high school girls golf tournament at the Edgebrook Golf Course.

    Roehrich shot a 9-over 79 on Monday and trails overall leader Jadyn McDonald of Chester by three shots. Jayce Pugh, a former state Class B champion, is second at 79. Olivia Mikkelsen of Potter County, another area golfer, is fourth at 81.

    The final holes of play are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The top six teams and 25 individuals receive awards.

    Defending champion Chester shot 250 to take a seven-shot lead over Miller (257) after the first day of play. Clark-Willow Lake was third at 275, followed by Jones County and Burke at 277 each.

    Class B Boys

    BROOKINGS — Blake Larson grabbed the individual lead with a 2-over-par 74 and helped Wessington Springs take control in the team standings on Monday during the opening round of the state Class B high school boys golf tournament at the Brookings Country Club.

    Larson led Derek Brueggeman of Miller and Gavin Colson of Sully Buttes by one shot heading into the final 18 holes of play on Tuesday. Drake Mueller of Faulkton Area and Taylor Kriech of Colman_Egan are tied for fourth at 76.

    Hamlin and Hanson are each tied for second at 246, nine shots behind Wessington Springs.

    The top six teams and 25 individuals earn awards.

    SIOUX FALLS — Tori Peterson of Sioux Falls Christian, Hayden Thorton of Rapid City Christian and Kaitlin Strain of St. Thomas More each carded 6-over-par 77s to share the opening-day lead in the state Class A high school girls golf tournament at Bakker Crossing Golf Course.

    Dakota Larson of West Central, Ronnie Wilharm of Vermillion, Katie Betsworth of Dakota Valley and Ari Jacobs of West Central each trail by one shot with the final 18 holes of play scheduled for Tuesday.

    The top six teams and 25 individuals earn awards.

    Team Scores — Sioux Falls Christian 319, Vermillion and West Central each 340, Madison 347, St. Thomas More 370, Aberdeen Roncalli 372, Chamberlain 371, Winner Area 403, Groton Area 405, Custer 412, Belle Fourche 415 and Mobridge-Pollock 448.
