Cooper baseball hosted Brooklyn Center last week in a 7-1 Hawks win May 17. The game was cut short in the bottom of the fifth inning due to lightning, but the weather did not stop the Hawks from picking up their third win of the season.

Cooper entered the week having recently earned its first conference win of the season, beating Fridley 8-4 at home. Brooklyn Center, meanwhile, had earned several non-conference wins this season, including one against Patrick Henry and two against Washington Tech.

Brooklyn Center started the game strong, earning a run in the top of the first thanks to a RBI single by Andres Rydberg to bring Grant Tenhaeff home. Jesus Anzaldo Lopez also hit a single, but the Centaurs’ scoring was halted by good pitching from Owen Vetter, who picked up two kills.

Cooper responded well in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs. It started with a single by Kameron Fox, who then stole second and third. An error gave Fox a runway to home plate and a second error eventually helped get Matthew Gerding home as well. The Hawks eventually loaded the bases with Christopher Giroux, Simon Gullickson, and Vetter. All three got home on errors before Lopez brought Brooklyn Center back to batting with a tag at first base. The bottom of the first also saw senior Blake Everhardt register his first varsity hit for the season after mentioning such a moment as one of his goals during a pre-game senior night presentation. He reached first base to much applause from teammate and spectator alike.

Giroux caught the first out in of the top of the second, his second out of the day, to get things started. Vetter then picked up a kill and Gullickson tagged another Centaur out at first. Gerding then got Cooper a sixth run to make it 6-1 going into the third inning. Vetter helped Cooper keep out further runs for Brooklyn Center with two kills in the top of the third, while Tenhaeff came in to pitch for the Centaurs and helped calm the storm, picking up a kill while Lopez got two more tags.

The next run came in the bottom of the fourth after Giroux got on base after being hit a pitch. He eventually reached third base on a box call, before heading home on an error to make it 7-1. Tenhaeff collected a strikeout to prevent further trouble.

The game was paused and later ended due to inclement weather May 17, after a lightning delay turned into unplayable conditions with heavy rainfall and further lightning storms. Cooper’s 7-1 lead, already quite resolute, stood as the final score.
