The eyes of the world are on Iowa as deep in the throes of the Cold War, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev makes a visit to tour its farms, claiming his nation will soon rival the state in corn production. The Register's sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on his Sept. 22, 1959, arrival at the Des Moines airport to visit his friend, seed entrepreneur Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids. The excursion follows a Pulitzer-winning 1956 editorial by the Register's Lauren K. Soth inviting a Soviet delegation to come to Iowa to study its agriculture.

The Beacon Village in Des Moines provides affordable housing to formerly incarcerated women
DES MOINES, Iowa — The recently opened Beacon Village acts as both an affordable housing option and a place for women in crises to heal. The facility located at the old Village Inn Motel off of East Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street in Des Moines has 32 units and is a place designed specifically for women who struggled with addiction and formerly incarcerated women. In order to live there, residents must be employed, single without kids and at least six months sober.

Jefferson’s Newest Police Officer is a Carroll Native
The Jefferson Police Department recently hired its seventh officer. Trevor Hansen was approved by the City Council at the June 25th meeting as the newest police officer. The 2022 Carroll High School graduate also has an associate degree in criminal justice from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny and recently worked as a jailer in the Polk County Jail for 1.5 years.
