Four-Day School Weeks A Benefit in Melcher-Dallas Schools Retaining More Staff
Melcher-Dallas Community Schools are set to begin four-day school weeks this academic year, and have already seen some advantages from the change. Superintendent Scott Bridges stated that one of the benefits of four-day school weeks was the ability to recruit and retain qualified staff members. Bridges reports that Melcher-Dallas saw minimal turnover in faculty for this academic year and says that he believes the change in their schedule helped keep staff within the district.
Approval of Westwood Golf Course Clubhouse Contract on Newton City Council Agenda
Construction of a new clubhouse at Newton’s Westwood Golf Course could take another step forward at Monday night’s Newton City Council meeting. The Council is being asked to accept a low $378,000 bid from Ball Team LLC of Urbandale. The Engineer’s cost estimate on the 60’ x 100’ post-frame clubhouse was just over $283,500, The City received three other bids that ranged up to $429,000. Newton residents approved this project as part of a September 13, 2022 bond referendum. The Newton City Council will also hear the annual Library Report from Library Director Nicole Terry, and end the meeting in closed session to discuss present or possible litigation. Monday Night’s Newton CIty Council Meeting will begin at 6:00p.m. at City Hall.
Maytag Pool’s Annual Dog Swim is This Sunday Evening
The event that annually ends the swimming season at Newton’s Maytag pool will be held tomorrow. From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday August 18th, dogs will be allowed into the pool, The Maytag Pool Dog Swim is a fundraiser for pool operations. Admission is $6.00 per dog & handler. TOne handler (16 years old or above) can enter the pool with each dog. A release waiver must be signed by each person entering the pool. Only dogs will be allowed to swim. All spectators must remain outside the fence or in the upper pool pavilion.

Stuart Library Hosting Presentations by 2024 Travel Scholarship Winners
Earlier this year, the Stuart Library Foundation announced the recipients of the 2024 International Travel Scholarships. Those individuals have completed their trips, and will now be giving presentations at the Stuart Public Library on August 26th at 6:30pm. Promise Garcia and Cael Hazen will discuss historical landmarks, different foods they tried, and tell stories of their trips. The International Travel Scholarships are funded through a donation from an anonymous donor, and the goal of the program is to allow young adults aged 18-25 in the West Central Valley School District the opportunity to travel outside of the United States to try and build knowledge about different global cultures. The next opportunity to apply for the scholarship will be in September.
