Coney Island’s July 4th festivities to draw thousands

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) — As Independence Day approaches, Coney Island is gearing up for one of its biggest celebrations yet.

Organizers anticipate a larger turnout this year than last, with thousands expected to flock to the iconic Brooklyn destination. The stage is set for the annual Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest , a tradition synonymous with the Fourth of July at Coney Island.

One of the day’s highlights is undoubtedly Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Competitors from around the country will gather to see who can devour the most hot dogs in a set amount of time. Jason Yakovov, who is particularly excited about the event, is among the contestants.

“I’m prepared… I’m gonna be like 25 hotdogs easy, easier with some water,” said Yakovov, who participated in a similar contest last year in New Jersey. His strategy? “You gotta eat, bro. You just gotta eat a lot of food, bro. That’s it.”

Bruce Miller, Senior Director of Company Operations for Nathan’s Famous, emphasized the contest’s historical significance.

“This is a tradition. This has been going on for about 90 years,” he said.

The contest, which is free to attend, is expected to draw a crowd of 40,000 people this year.

“It’s a little bit more than last year. Since Covid, we had a little damper, but now we’re coming back around to where we used to be, with people flocking to Coney Island,” Miller added.

The festivities don’t end with the hot dog eating contest. As the sun sets, the sky over Coney Island will light up with a spectacular fireworks display.

“We have not only daytime but nighttime activities. We have a fantastic fireworks display right here at the pier. And it’s open, free for all to come,” said Daniel Murphy, the Alliance for Coney Island executive director.

The fireworks display will begin at 9:45 p.m., and Murphy recommends arriving early to secure the best views. The display will be visible from various points along the Riegelmann Boardwalk and Steeplechase Park, ensuring everyone can enjoy the show.

In addition to the hot dog eating contest and fireworks, visitors can enjoy a host of other activities throughout the day. From taking a dip in the ocean to riding the Cyclone, there is something for everyone at Coney Island on the Fourth of July. The festivities promise to be a memorable experience for all who attend.

As event organizers work behind the scenes to ensure a smooth and exciting Fourth of July, competitors like Yakovov are preparing for their big moment.

“It’s going to be so cool. I’m going to be chilling here with all my boys,” Yakovov said, looking forward to the day.

The hot dog eating competition begins at 11 a.m., and the fireworks will cap off the night at 9:45 p.m. on Friday, July 5, at 9:45 p.m.
