One man has been killed and three others injured after two water vessels horrifically collided with each other, according to police.

Emergency services were called to the fatal incident at around 11.50am near Plumb Beach, in the Gerritsen Creek waters, following reports of a maritime crash.

A 58-year-old man, a 56-year-old man, and a 45-year-old woman were on one craft and a 68-year-old man was on the second, according to officers.

The 58-year-old man, who was administered CPR at the scene, was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Tragically, he died just a short while later.

Meanwhile, the 56-year-old man and 45-year-old woman were transferred to Coney Island Hospital in stable condition, police said. The 68-year-old was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The identities of the men and women have yet to be disclosed by police.

The fatal accident comes just weeks after Sarina Vootkur, 16, and 13-year-old Elle Kim were racing along on a jet ski on Lake Marie on Tuesday, allegedly traveling at an incredibly "high rate of speed" when they crashed into a boat.

They had been approaching the Gass Lake Channel, the Lake County Sheriff's Office revealed in a Facebook update on the incident, and found themselves unable to avoid hitting a boat operated by a 55-year-old man. Both were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water.

Despite wearing life vests, the girls didn't stand a chance after being thrown in at such high velocities. There had been four people on the boat, and they helped pull the teens out of the water.

They rendered aid to the best of their abilities as they called 911. One of the girls was taken back to the shore by the boat's operator, while a passing vessel took the other girl.

Their heroic efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, however. Both girls were rushed to a nearby hospital in Libertyville but pronounced dead upon arrival. They were the only injuries related to the deadly crash.

In an autopsy shortly after their deaths, the Lake County Coroner's Office reported that they had died from serious blunt force injuries incurred by the collision, Gray News reported.

An investigation into the crash is underway by the Lake County Sheriff's Office as well as the Illinois Conservation Police. "The Lake County Sheriff's Office extends its condolences to the families of the girls and others involved in this tragic boat crash," the sheriff's office wrote.
