Noah Clowney doesn’t feel like a rookie anymore with chance to earn expanded Nets role

Nets teenager Noah Clowney is still one of the youngest players in the entire NBA, but says he doesn’t feel like a rookie anymore.
No wonder.
Heading into his second summer league — which the Nets open on Friday — Clowney has already played for fired head coach Jacque Vaughn, interim Kevin Ollie and will suit up for Steve Hetzel in Las Vegas, before newly hired head coach Jordi Fernandez ever makes his official Brooklyn debut.
That doesn’t even mention face-of-the-franchise Mikal Bridges getting traded .
“They say I’m still a rook until I play 82, but I ain’t no rookie anymore,” said the 6-foot-9 Clowney, who’ll be one of the stars of the Nets’ summer league squad.
Still just 19, he was the fifth-youngest player in the league last season.
“That’s great,” Clowney said of Claxton’s return on a four-year, $100 million deal . “That’s great. We want Clax back. Us on the court together, we’ve shown that we can do a little bit, and we can improve on that, obviously. We can be really good together. I was excited to see him sign.”
“I was playing pool with my family. We were playing 8-ball and pingpong. And then I see the trade on my phone,” Clowney said. “My next thought was … in shock because obviously I’m not in the front office; I don’t know what’s going on. I feel like Mikal should almost feel proud in a sense to get traded for five first-round picks is superstar-level type things.”
As green as Clowney is, he’s not too young to recognize a golden opportunity when it’s sitting in front of him.
“It’s an opportunity [for me] so I can’t [waste it],” Clowney said. “No shade to [Bridges]; that’s my dog. I love him; but to see us going into more of a rebuilding standpoint that’s an amazing opportunity to me, and I gotta try to take advantage of that.”
“Just trying to build with what we’ve got is my main focus. The picks, I leave that to the people who decide all that; I just try to do my part, play hard and be enthusiastic about everything we’re doing. So, opportunities will be fun.”
Fellow second-year pro Dariq Whitehead, who had just two cameos for 24 minutes before season-ending surgery, is fully cleared for summer league.
“No, at this point, we’re gonna throw him out there,” GM Sean Marks said. “He hasn’t played in two years on a consistent basis, so we have to temper that a little bit. But at the same time, I know the young man is itching to get out there and play and get back to form. So that’s exciting for us to see how it goes.”
Marks was hopeful of retaining Trendon Watford.
The Nets can match any offer to the restricted free agent.
