Historic Brooklyn store Crest Hardware closing after over 60 years

WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A beloved hardware store that’s been a staple in Brooklyn for more than six decades is closing its doors for good after the owner said his property partners have opted not to renew his lease.

Crest Hardware & Urban Garden Center has been the go-to spot to buy garden supplies, electrical tools, and household items for decades, becoming a cornerstone of the Williamsburg community. After more than 60 years of business, the hardware shop will close its doors for good at the end of August.

“Having to leave here is heartbreaking in a lot of ways,” store owner Joe Franquinha told PIX11 on Wednesday. “I’ve been here my entire life.”

Franquinha told PIX11 that Crest is being forced to shut down after not being granted a lease renewal. The store’s property is owned by his family, who have decided to sell the land, marking the end of an era for the beloved business.

Longtime customers like Fabrizio Sandoval are devastated to see the store go.

“It’s a bummer,” Sandoval said. “Not only ‘cause it is a staple, but they’re really good friends of ours, and it just sucks to see them go.”

Franquinha cherishes the memories of his childhood spent at the store, founded by his father, Manny and Uncle Joe, on Metropolitan Avenue. The business started as a small shop across the street, which eventually grew and moved to its current location, which now boasts a greenhouse and outdoor garden.

“I’ve been proud to carry the torch for as long as I have,” said Franquinha. “It was his my life’s work. It’s been mine for the last 20 years but I know that no matter what, and even us closing this chapter, that he would certainly be proud of what we’ve all accomplished here.”

As the shop approaches its final day, Franquinha’s future is uncertain.

“For now, I’m just kind of focused on the task at hand, and that’s making sure my employees all land on their feet elsewhere and that we can wrap this all up and keep our heads held high throughout this whole process,” Franquinha said.

Before Crest officially closes its doors, Franquinha said he plans to throw a farewell celebration so loyal customers can say their final goodbyes to a store that’s been like a second home to many.
