BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A new exhibition at the Brooklyn Made Store in City Point is putting the spotlight on the borough’s vibrant street photography scene.

Titled “They’re There,”, the exhibition runs until the end of August and features the work of six local photographers who have captured the essence of Brooklyn’s streets.

One of the featured artists, Reuben Radding, shared his journey into photography. “My interest in photography really comes from my interest in New York City. I still remember the first day I moved here in 1988,” Radding said.

Radding, a seasoned street photographer, recalls his early days in Brooklyn: “I remember walking out my door the first time, in Sunset Park and just seeing all of this stuff going on around me, like I was in a movie.”

The exhibition includes three of Radding’s pieces from his forthcoming book, “Heavenly Arms,” which compiles a decade of his photography in the city. “These three were all taken in Brooklyn.”

Radding’s approach to photography is unique, allowing viewers to form their own interpretations of his work.

“Usually what I would do is I would see things felt amazing to me and I would want to tell people about them, but the words always felt inadequate. So I started photographing, thinking if I could just show someone what I saw, that would be the most effective thing,” said Radding.

For Radding, the exhibit at Brooklyn Made Store is particularly meaningful. He sees it as a validation of the artistic community that has flourished in Brooklyn over the years.

The Brooklyn Made Store plays a crucial role in supporting local artists and businesses. Gabrielle Napolitano, Director of Partnership and Communications for the Brooklyn Made Stores, explained the store’s mission: “The whole mission of the Brooklyn Made Store is to focus on improving and increasing commerce to our borough, which includes improving small businesses, which includes artists.” Napolitano added, “The point of it is to bring together artists from our borough.”

The exhibit is free to the public, and photography can be purchased at the Brooklyn Made Store. It’s an opportunity for art enthusiasts and supporters of local talent to experience and potentially own a piece of Brooklyn’s vibrant street photography scene.

Reflecting on the exhibition and Brooklyn’s evolution, Radding concluded, “I know that we are the reason that Brooklyn has become a destination. And so it feels very validating to have that presented here in a store about Brooklyn.”
