Food insecurity remains a pressing issue across Brooklyn, but one organization is doing its part to alleviate the crisis. Every other week, more than 1,000 people gather on Riverdale Avenue outside the
Salvation Army Brownsville Corps , where its food pantry serves as a crucial resource for those facing hunger. "It's a good little safe haven…It helps out for those who need it. Kids and all. It does help so I appreciate it," said Kim Thomas, a resident of Brownsville who has relied on the Salvation Army's food pantry for over nine years to support her family. According to representatives from the Salvation Army, they assisted 600,000 New Yorkers at the Brownsville location alone in 2023. However, they noted that food insecurity is escalating due to inflation and the rising cost of living. The pantry operates every other week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. and continually accepts donations to keep up with demand. Further information on how to support or access the Salvation Army's food pantry can be found on their website or by calling 718-345-7050. "
