BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — In the heart of Brooklyn, a transformative initiative known as the “Heal Through Art” program makes waves by empowering young individuals by fusing creativity and business acumen.

The program aims to nurture the artistic talents of youth and equip them with the skills necessary to turn their creativity into thriving brands and businesses.

Ethon Wilson, 17, is one of the many participants who have experienced profound personal growth through the program. Initially joining at the suggestion of a friend, Wilson has found the experience to be life-changing.

“It has changed my life in many ways. Just being grateful, learning how to be grateful and to have something to give before you get,” he shared.

The “Heal Through Art” program goes beyond traditional art education. Participants like Wilson are taught various valuable life skills, including cooking, creating canvas art, using drones, teamwork, and event planning.

Wilson highlights the comprehensive nature of the program.

“We learned about business. We learned how to put together an event. We learned planning and all the stuff that you need if you want to create something and put it out to the world,” he said.

Robin Reyes, the founder and CEO of “Heal Through Art,” emphasizes the program’s significance in today’s society.

“People in the world need therapy. People in the world need mentorship,” Reyes explained.

He believes that by teaching young people to channel their creativity positively, they can achieve success without resorting to negative behaviors.

The program’s CFO, Egaudy Gomez, underscores the importance of donations to sustain and expand the initiative.

“Everything goes directly to the kids. It goes to buying art materials. Paint is expensive, canvases, sewing machines. We want drones. We want to put cameras in their hands. We want them to empower themselves to know that everything that’s available in high-tech schools, they could also get here,” Gomez said.

As Wilson continues to grow and develop his skills through the program, he remains optimistic about his future.

“When I get older, I find passion in art. I know I like art myself, and doing this with my mentor Robin, I found out that art is my thing. It’s my jam,” Wilson said.

The “Heal Through Art” program, founded by Reyes, a formerly homeless artist, has been implemented in various public schools and community centers across Brooklyn. The program not only teaches art techniques but also focuses on entrepreneurial skills, helping students turn their talents into purposeful careers.

Reyes’ journey from homelessness to success inspires the youth and demonstrates the power of creativity and resilience.

Reyes hopes the program will continue to expand and reach even more individuals in need.

“We are trying to take this to another level,” he said. “We’re trying to really change and impact society.”

Through initiatives like “Heal Through Art,” Brooklyn’s youth are finding their voices, honing their talents, and building brighter futures, one creative endeavor at a time.
