The mayor's chief of staff said on Wednesday that the city is working toward opening 20 smaller shelters across the city in an effort to increase safety. Chief of Staff Camille Joseph Varlack says that if the trend of fewer migrants coming to New York City continues, larger shelters that have shown to be safety issues, including the Hall Street and Ryerson Street shelters where violence has taken place, will be closed.

"Hall Street is one of those locations.... Randall's is another. Certainly Floyd Bennett Field." According to the mayor's office, just over 800 migrants entered the city's care last week - far fewer than in December 2023, when the city reported over 7,000 migrants arrived in a two-week period. "
