MTA bus crashes into Burger King in Brooklyn after driver suffers medical episode

An MTA bus crashed into a Burger King in Brooklyn after its driver suffered a medical episode while on duty early Thursday morning.

Surveillance video shows the crash that happened around 12:10 a.m. at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and Dahill Road.

Police say the 60-year-old driver lost control of the B16 bus, which swerved across the median and smashed into the side of the Burger King.

Officials with the MTA said it appears the driver had a cardiac episode. He was taken to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition.

Two women, ages 60 and 23, were on the bus at the time. Both declined medical attention.

One of them rushed to the driver's aid and said he was moaning and he passed out.

The rider, Valorie Terner, said it happened quickly.

"The bus started speeding up quick," she said. "Before I knew it, we were in Burger King."

The MTA bus was pulled out of the restaurant by 5 a.m. A huge hole now exists where storefront windows, lined with tables and chairs, once were.

The Burger King had closed 10 minutes before the crash and the franchise owner, Javid Syed, said he was grateful employees and customers were not inside.

The Buildings Department has issued a full vacate order for the restaurant and ordered the building owner to hire an engineer to assess the structural stability of the structure. However it was noted that the steel columns remained in place.
