Advocates and elected officials came together outside of the Brooklyn Public Library on Thursday to demand an end to a "power grab" from Mayor Eric Adams. Mayor Eric Adams launched a Charter Revision Commission in May that put out a list of changes to the city's constitution, impacting how the city handles things such as public safety and budgeting. Those changes will be voted on by New Yorkers at ballot boxes in November. Members of the City Council and other local leaders are pushing back hard on some of those proposals, with many saying that they would only give more power to the mayor at the expense of voters. "This is a dangerous attempt to shift power away from the people represented by the City Council to one single individual. No one person should have this much power," said City Council speaker Adrienne Adams. Mayor Adams' office put out a statement after the commission voted to approve putting those changes on the ballot: "This commission carefully examined our city's charter, heard from residents across all five boroughs, and approved thoughtful ballot proposals.. that their fellow New Yorkers will have the opportunity to vote on when they flip their ballots this November."
