Assault Victim Dies Following Attack Outside Rudy’s Bar on 9th Avenue

Police are investigating a fatal assault after a German immigrant living in Brooklyn died from injuries sustained during an attack outside Rudy’s Bar & Grill on 9th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen.

Florian Oltmann, 38, from N 7th Street in Brooklyn, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition with a head injury, and succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Police said that the family has been notified.

The incident, which was previously reported here , occurred around 2:47 am on Tuesday outside Rudy’s dive bar, located at 627 9th Avenue (bw W44/45th St). Police responded to a 911 call and found two men, aged 38 and 56, with head injuries.

According to police, an unidentified man riding a black moped on the sidewalk bumped into the 56-year-old man, leading to an argument. The suspect then punched the older victim in the face, knocking him unconscious. When the 38-year-old friend intervened, he was also punched, losing consciousness.

EMS arrived on the scene and transported both victims to local hospitals. The 56-year-old was treated and released from Mount Sinai West, while the 38-year-old remained in critical condition until his death.

“We would hope that he [the suspect] sees your report and realizes what he has done. That he might even turn himself in,” a friend of the victim told W42ST. “We are left with the memory that he enjoyed his life to the full. He chose to spend his life in New York because he loved it there so much that he could not imagine living anywhere else. He was a good, friendly person who stood up for his friends even in situations like the last one.”

Police have released surveillance footage of the suspect, described as a Black male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with black hair in a braid. He was wearing a white T-shirt and black pants with a white stripe down the leg. The suspect fled the scene on a black moped.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police are awaiting the medical examiner’s report following a full autopsy. No arrests have been made.
